Mosquitoes are annoying. And if you are in the Midwest (or another extremely humid area) you can’t go for a walk on a summer night without being bitten by a mosquito. They breed near water and they love humidity, and when night falls, they love the cool air so they go try to find a meal, YOU. Luckily, you may have a solution if you grow garlic.
Although we cannot exterminate mosquitoes from the earth, first as it is impossible with insects being the most successful beings on the earth, and secondly mosquitoes being a tasty meal for some animals, the next best way to keep them away from us is by disguising our smell. The mosquito finds its blood meal mainly tracking the discharges of lactic acid and carbon dioxide, but if we can mask those smells using a chemical such as DEET (N,N-diethyl-3-methylbenzamide), the mosquito won’t know we are edible. However, some people are unable to endure this chemical while outside or want to use a more organic repellent; they do have an alternative: Garlic!
Whether you eat garlic or use a spray containing garlic, this natural method works! A study in India shows a topical application containing beeswax, petroleum jelly and one percent garlic oil was found to prevent mosquito bites for up to eight hours.
Conclusion: Garlic isn't just great for cooking and tasting great in meals with pasta or meat, but its benefits extend even beyond the kitchen! If you don't like using harmful man-made chemicals and crave organic solutions whenever you can, try eating some garlic before you go outside! Only one side effect: garlic breath!
