Lew Archer, a former policeman, is now working as a P.I. He is called to the home of Mrs. Samuel Lawrence. As soon as Lew pulled up to the home, he knew the family didn’t have much money. Mrs. Lawrence informed him that her daughter, Galley, had disappeared. Mrs. Larwrence indicated that Galley disappeared a few days before Christmas. Even her card arrived late. She was always home for Christmas but not this time. Galley has not been in contact with any of her friends either.
Mrs. Lawrence pointed out to Lew that Galley has always been fascinating to men. Lew questioned as to why she does not go to the police but her answer was “If Galley is living in sin with some man, it is nobody’s business but my own.”
Mrs. Lawrence handed Lew fifty dollars and asked him to find her missing daughter. She was last seen driving off with gangster, Joe Tarantine. There wasn’t too much of a trail for Lew to follow but just enough to get him started. Lew was an expert at gathering bits and pieces of evidence and putting the puzzle together.
As Archer gets more involved in the investigation, he discovers that this is much more complicated than a routine missing person case. Things really get interesting when bodies start to pile up.
Is Lew Archer successful at solving this case?
The publicity information that came with this book stated “They don’t write mysteries like they used to, and that is why Ross Macdonald’s Lew Archer P.I. stories remain the finest series of detective novels every written by an American.”
I have to agree with this statement. I knew I was in for a terrific read from the very first page of this book. This is the first time I have read a Ross MacDonald book so I cannot compare it to any of his others but this is one book that will keep you on edge throughout the story. The author has a distinct descriptive writing style that will keep the reader engrossed. If you are looking for a book with an exciting plot, twists and turns and enjoy hardboiled mysteries, be sure to read “The Way Some People Die”. This book is highly recommended.
